Sold out! Sports Booster: Sumatra Raja Batak Peaberry. I’d like to thank all the Sports Boosters. It’s this time of the year as we transition sports seasons, we thank one group of Boosters and welcome another. The Coaches may get to ride the glory roller coaster, but it is the Boosters that keep the carpools running. Thank you Coaches, thank you Boosters! Although roasted dark, this bean retains some chocolate sweetness, so you can fill your Maverik travel mug to the brim and get your carpool rolling.
Sold out! Fleece Beanie: Ethiopia Dry Process Guji Gorgora. It’s that time of the year when the temperatures start to drop and you don’t need your eleven year old to be reminded of one’s up-top follicle shortcomings. As comforting as a fleece beanie, this dark and rich roast is a brilliant choice to accompany the season’s change.
Sold Out! Sideways Pelican: Ethiopia Yirga Cheffe Wonago Town. Just back from the beach, and loving this new roast. All the big and bold taste explosion you would expect from a Yirga Cheffe.
Sold Out! Stormy in a Teacup: Rwanda Rulindo Tumba Lot 5719. Never fear, there’s no gag order on your love affair with this roast. Big, bold, and brassy with plenty of legs, a morning cup is guaranteed to be far from just a brief encounter. Roasted dark and strong for a full-bodied brew.
Sold Out! Dark and Stormy: Sumatra Gayo Lues Cike. The Stormy mini-series roasting continues with this Indonesian Sumatra. Roasted bigly, the taste from a single sip will just not go away, no matter how many impassioned fake denials are broadcast. Big and bold.
Sold Out! Ski Bum: Ethiopia Bedele Sota Coop. When your mind dreaming of carving deep and steep POW between the pines but your body creaks and groans just putting your ski boots on, this roast will warm and loosen things up for you. Roasted dark and strong, it’ll keep you fired and wired up on the slopes. Robust and ashy.
Sold Out! Stable Genius: Rwanda “Milles Collines” Peaberry. No need to question anyone’s mental acuity here. Welcoming a Peaberry back into Chewie’s roasting stable; genius, if I may say. A very tight and dark punch with a fruitier follow through. Nothing crazy about this roast. A Stable Genius, in fact.
Sold Out! Biggs Darklighter: Mexico, Altos region of Chiapas Arabica. MexicoEven Luke needs a wingman, and ain’t nobody better than Biggs. And this Biggs roast is the same good wingman to Wall-buster, having made the trip across the border as checked luggage companions. Biggs went down in flames strapped in the cockpit of an X-wing, so in true tribute I’ll be roasting this bean hero dark.
Sold Out! Wall-buster 2.0: El Espinal, Veracruz, Mexico. My good hombres KC and the rest of her sunshine band did it again, hooking me up this time with Jose Miguel Franco, a coffee farmer from the Coatapec region in Mexico, and definitely a Very Good Hombre! There’s no Wall stopping this bean, so get it while you can. It’s an Arabica bean, harvested using the red honey process. A fine cup on its own; Grito ay-ay!!
Sold Out! Black Friday: Burundi Kiganda Murambi. If you are looking for a deep discount then turnaround and seek the blue-vesters instead. The oils popped early on roasting this bean, leading to a lighter, though still full-flavored roast. On tasting, starts with enough sweetness to get hipster plaid flannel knotted in a bunch, but finishes with our old boomer faithful – camp fire ash. Not bad. A bargain, even at full price’n’some. Enjoy.
Sold Out! 320-Grit: India Ratnagiri Pearl Mountain Peaberry. Smooth like Gregory Peck on a Roman Holiday with just a little rugged stubble. Another return for the Peaberry bean, and not one to disappoint either. Lovely mellow and rounded out coffee taste. The Peaberry will be becoming a regular in Chewie’s stable.
Sold Out! HallowBe’an: Burundi Kayanza Dusangirijambo Coop. This roast is so good it’s scary. Scarier than Christopher Lee introducing a Grace Jones comeback tour. No hocus pocus here, and definitely more treat than trick! Monster big, cauldron dark, and hair-raisingly bold – just right for the Fall season.
Sold Out! Dang! Sumatra Raja Batak Peaberry. First Evergreen snow. O dark thirty. Leash up canines. Foray misty darkness. Mountains white cold. Coffee black hot. Sip. Dang! This roasted bean’s tighter than a puddle-jumper bathroom! Great to have a Peaberry back on the roster. Very, very rounded, fulsome, with a long and lasting follow through. Marvelous.
Sold Out! Nambia’s Majesty: Guatemala Proyecto Xinabajul Hoja Blanca. I was clearing out my Yahoo junk mail folder from 1998 when I discovered I was in line to make several million dollars if I laundered even more several million dollars on behalf of the African Prince of Nambia. Easy money! Although we were not able to strike a deal, I did manage to secure a Chewie’s Beans exclusive from the Kingdom of Nambia. The coffee, consumed in some quantity by their populus, prevents all known ills. This quality has led to one of the very best health care systems in the world. So, be healthy, drink more coffee. Especially this one.
Sold Out! Black Bear: Kenya Muranga Riakiberu AA. Nothing whimsical with the name of this roast, just going on appearances alone. Dark black, big and bold. Will keep you awake ’til winter.
Sold Out! Coner Coffee: Rwanda Kivu Kageyo Station Lot 1. Ever been on a MTB ride and feel you’re in an Esher drawing? Like Centennial Cone clockwise – “The Coner” – this brew will put you on the uphill from the start, and feel like you’re still going uphill at the finish. Very nice as an espresso, with Battenberg marzipan coming through stronger and faster than a Wookie on a Yeti on gnarly technical for sure.
Sold Out! Creaky Knees: Rwanda Nyamasheke Mutovu Lot 1. A bunch of us are riding the Bike MS Colorado ride towards the end of June. Roasted to ride long and smooth with a little punch for the uphills! All profits going to the MS cause. Thanks in advance – order right up to the ride.
Sold Out! Amanda’s Addiction: Dark Roast. Rwanda Kivu Kanzu. When the alarm goes off and the precious items you grab instinctively whilst running out of the house happen to be your kids, a fresh brewed pot of coffee, and a mug (and not necessarily in that order…) you know you love your coffee! This is a dark roast, with hints of charred wheat toast and far away Thornton’s toffee.
Sold Out! Wall-buster: Zongolica, Veracruz. Thank you to KC for hitting me up with Juvencia Oltehua, a coffee farmer from Zongolica Mexico, and definitely a Very Good Hombre! There’s no Wall stopping this bean, so get it while you can. It’s an Arabica roast, so in addition to being a fine cup on its own, works great as an espresso, or cutting it for a little extra kick with the sweet beans you get from the hipster roasters down the hill.
Sold Out! Mooch’s Fandango: Burundi Kazosa N’Ikawa Station. Not clowning around with this roast. Italian dark, hedge fund rich, and blue aviator sunglasses smooth. Not as powerful as it looks, so drinks very well as a drip or an Americano. An espresso draws a Carhartt duck brown crema with wonderful upper notes of a lemon tart. Be aware, this one tastes so good, not sure it’s going to last more than 10 days.
Sold Out! 100 Days: Medium Dark Roast. Burundi Kayanza Ruyaga. I thought this coffee roasting would be easier. SAD! However, I have for you something amazing, it’s a terrific roast. It’s going to be huge. These beans are beautiful, probably the best roast ever you’ll ever have roasted for you. Not like those other FAKE beans, roasted by those zero hipsters with no class. Tastes TREMENDOUS!
Sold out! His Nibs: Medium roast. Java Gunung Kencana. This one is a class apart and deserving of “His Nibs” over there. A very mild but well-rounded taste experience, with an unsweetened chocolate nibs finish will leave you feeling like aristocracy. To prove how good it is, don’t take Chewie’s word for it, even Chai-drinking coffee disliking Julie declared this one “not bad”.
Sold Out! Why Bother? House decaf. Medium Roast. Costa Rica Carol y Jose SWP Decaf. Tastes like coffee. Apparently. Full flavored with a sweetness that does not overpower. Adding a house decaf to the roster; beans may change, but decaf always an option!
Sold out! Old Staffer: Dark Roast. Sulawesi Bone Bone Kalaciri. Gliding through the gilded halls of power Old Staffers tread, where power and influence are the notes and coins of the realm. Forget the fine Cabernet to settle differences, and turn to an Old Staffer instead. Refined, with a long and lasting smooth finish.
Sold Out! Kramer’s Saab: House espresso. Espresso roast. Sweet Maria’s Majirani African Blend. It pulls with a crema the color of a Mar-a-Lago spray-on self tanner – but let me tell you, it lasts a so much longer with no lasting “Fake Hues”. Oh yeah Jerry! You’ll never feel so alive as you ride it below the slash. This needle’s on E for Enjoy! Adding a house espresso to the roster; beans may change, but espresso always an option!
Sold Out! Lurding’s Live Rounds: Dark Roast. Tanzania Shiwanda Estate Peaberry. This roast is dedicated to my very good friend, who, although about to pass through the gates of fifty has managed to roast his own beans and is on the way to fatherhood. Bravo! This roast is guaranteed to pollinate your kisser and fertilize your taste buds and you’ll experience a wide range of diner-coffee tones with a lingering hint of smoked honey-baked ham, adding a slight sweetness to this darker roast. Pretty good.
Sold Out! Half Monty: Medium Roast. Rwanda Abangakurushwa Coop. The lights went out half way through this show – only the Half Monty! I dialed down the roasting time to leave a mellow medium roast. Marzipan on the nose, with a sweet baker’s biscuit follow through. Pretty sure though this Half Monty will provide Full satisfaction!
Sold Out! R2Bean2: Dark Roast. Burundi Kivubo Station. First time out for Chewie with a Burundi bean. Earthy nose and flavor with a Pontefract cake finish. Ran it through the espresso machine; an almost MOAB color crema with a mad donkey’s kick to it. Be warned!
Sold Out! The Bean that Turned: Dark/Medium Roast. Brazil Dry Process Fazenda Chapada. OK, these are the same beans as Shopping Trolley. However, with the recent acquisition of a 200,000 BTU burner, I managed to turn up the heat on these buggers to get the dark and waxy roast I was hoping for in the first place. Slight taste of Grandma’s Christmas pudding sixpence with a chocolate covered espresso bean finish. Really quite good, and a roast fans of Vader’s Revenge will appreciate – for sure.
Sold Out! Quehl’s Nocturne. Dark Roast. Peru FTO El Palto – Sr. Bravo. If you like to start with a black canvas and paint it white, then this one’s for you. Dedicated to The Honorable to hopefully lighten his dark misbegotten heart. Warm leather on the nose, with a smooth cooked chocolate on the follow through. Very enjoyable on the palate for a mid-morning brew.
Sold Out! Keep your day jobs, Gentlemen: Dark/Medium Roast. Sumatra Lintong Boru Batak. Another Sumatra in the portfolio. Early in the brew, slight aroma of wet marzipan on the nose. Bright, broad range, mouth-filling taste on the first sip, with a pleasant burnt Whole Foods salted caramel cookie follow through. Also good for espresso, with a light crema and well rounded flavor. I know we have to keep our day jobs, but this one is keeping the dream alive!
Sold Out! Shrinkage!: Medium/Dark Roast. Kenya Nyeri Gatugi Peaberry. Felt like roasting a bunch of very happy but undernourished dried peas before the Park Farm Chippy got ahold of them. Got a pretty good, even roast though, and a stronger flavor comes through nicely. Not overpowering at all. A solid brew. The Peaberry bean is known for its own qualities. Costanza would be proud!
Sold Out! Vader’s Revenge: Dark Roast. Aged Sumatra Danao Toba 2011 Vintage. This roasted and waxed up very, very nicely. I ran the roast through the espresso machine, as well as several batches in the Chemex. I swear a cup of this took me right into next week. Strong coffee flavor with a taste of sweet camp fire ash. Bloody marvelous! Definitely an upper. Time to hyperdrive to the Dark Side.
Sold Out! Shopping Trolley: Medium Roast. Brazil Dry Process Fazenda Chapada: I tried hard to roast this out to black and waxy, but the little buggers would not turn. Also, I’ve found the roast is not particularly even. However, that said, I think the unevenness of the roast ends up being a little like a blend, with a broader spectrum of flavors. So, net-net is that it’s a pretty good daily drinker with a touch of mocha at the finish. Bottom line, just like an Asda shopping trolley, it just has a mind of its own.
